Culverts & Drainage questions we get asked

Straight answers on scope, cost drivers and what to send. Anything not covered here, call Zeke and ask.

Why does water stand in my yard after it rains?

Usually one of three reasons: the ground slopes toward the low spot instead of away from it, the low spot has no outlet, or the outlet it used to have is blocked or has silted in. Florida's high water table can also hold water near the surface after a heavy storm even when the grading is correct. The fix depends on which of those is actually happening.

What is a culvert and do I need one?

A culvert is a pipe that carries water under a driveway or access point so the ditch line keeps flowing. If your driveway crosses a swale or roadside ditch, a properly sized and set culvert is what keeps the water moving instead of backing up or cutting around the ends. Your county or city usually has requirements for driveway culverts, so check before the work is scheduled.

Can you fix a driveway that washes out every storm?

Yes. Washouts are a drainage problem showing up as a surface problem. The repair usually combines reshaping the driveway so water sheets off instead of running down it, giving that water somewhere to go, and rebuilding the base with material that holds up. Patching the ruts alone is why it keeps coming back.

What should I send for a drainage estimate?

Photos taken while the water is actually standing, plus photos of the same area when it is dry. Include where you think the water is coming from, where it used to go, the approximate area affected, and any nearby ditches, swales or storm drains. That combination tells us far more than measurements alone.
